Dear members of Congress,
This nation faces several looming financial crises. To solve them, we need truth and courage, not deceit and political sabotage.
So, please, members of Congress, particularly well-meaning Republicans, be honest and open about your agenda and keep the welfare of the nation paramount in your negotiations. Try and keep your political aims and social agenda separate from fiscal action to improve our financial well-being. Each social issue deserves its own debate and action and none should be used to extort the entire democratic process.
I know many of you are beholding to your donors and benefactors. But, answer to your higher selves and put the needs of the many over the greed of the few. Wealthy Americans and corporate America are doing just fine. It's the middle class and working poor who need your urgent help.
Our fate is in your hands, our representatives, and yours in ours, the voters.
Be responsible stewards of our trust and support. Do not repeat the cynical, irresponsible brinkmanship that tarnished your most recent budget negotiations and threatened a government shutdown. Have an open and honest debate, followed by reasoned, bilateral, bipartisan decisions on how we go forward.
Standing firmly and unyielding at extreme positions, no matter how devoutly held, is unproductive and counter to the political history of this melting pot of people and ideas.
Listen to the concerns of your constituency, of course. But, we are not a true democracy, rather, we are a representative democracy. So, it is your job to hear, understand and consider the concerns of all constituencies and then craft the best legislation for the greater good of all.
Principled compromise has always been one of the political hallmarks of the land.
